PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The historic Hogan Barn, located on the site of the old Fox Mine in Boulder Open Space, was used in the late 1800s
as a boarding house for miners and later as a barn. Preservation Technology was hired to restore the stone masonry,
which required deep, structural repointing and stone replacement. Sand was quarried from nearby South Boulder Creek
to match the original mortar aggregate in color and texture, and sieve analysis of the original and replacement aggregates
was used to duplicate the particle size distribution. The replacement mortar was color-matched to a shade lighter than the
existing mortar; it is anticipated that the restoration mortar will match the color of the original after some years of
environmental exposure. To repair cracked and deteriorated stone masonry, original stones from the structure were
removed, resurfaced, and re-laid.
