PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The brickwork merlons (the merlons are the solid parts of a battlemented parapet) of this battlemented parapet were disbonded
and posed a safety hazard. Preservation Technology disassembled and rebuilt the parapet per an
Atkinson-Noland & Associates' specification. Stainless steel reinforcing bars were installed into the wall below the parapet
using a core-drilling rig. The merlons were rebuilt around the rods and a compatible grout was used to bond the assembly together.
The strength and absorption of the brick were measured in the Atkinson-Noland & Associates' laboratory,
and the mortar and grout formulations used for the project were custom designed based on the brick properties.
SERVICES PROVIDED BY Preservation Technology
- Represented the Church in negotiations with the City of Boulder Historic Board to obtain the required permits.
- Performed all construction work, including core drilling, grouting, brickwork, and stonework.
